Why We Go Here

At the northernmost tip of Australia, across the Torres Strait from Papua New Guinea, lies one of the most robust, varied, and uncrowded saltwater fisheries in the world.

Guests access the fishery through Weipa before traveling north to the small Indigenous community of Mapoon, where they board the 64-foot mothership, Freedom. From there, anglers gain access to more than 100 miles of coastline, including 11 rivers and extensive river-mouth flats that create an incredibly diverse fishery.

Each day is spent exploring a variety of flats, river systems, and creeks aboard dedicated skiffs with a two-angler-to-one-guide ratio. It is not uncommon to encounter more than 30 species during a week's fishing. Anglers can target high-speed pelagics such as tuna and mackerel, sight fish for trevally and queenfish on the flats, or pursue barramundi, giant herring, and mangrove jack throughout the river systems.

The area is also home to the prized Indo-Pacific Permit (T. anak), one of the world's "Big 4" permit species and a coveted challenge for dedicated flats anglers. Combined with the region's remoteness, diversity, and remarkable fish populations, North Mapoon offers an unforgettable fly fishing adventure in one of Australia's most remote destinations.
