Hareline flat-end Tungsten Hour Glass Eyes.
If a customer is tying baitfish-type fly patterns and wants the greatest sink rate for each given barbell size, plus the enhanced look of pupils, we recommend Hareline flat-end tungsten hour glass barbell fly tying eyes. Hour glass barbell eyes are different from standard barbells in that the center stem is slimmer and is slightly off-center. As the photo shows, this makes it a little easier to center the barbell on the hook shank and makes securing these barbell eyes a simple task.
The tungsten composition of these fly tying barbells gives them super sink-ness properties without the conscience-nagging properties of lead barbell eyes.
These flat end tungsten fly tying hour glass eyes can be tied in black, copper, gold and silver and one is welcome to add a glued-on pupil however, addition of said pupil with super glue is not mandatory.
EXCEPT during the second two weeks of October when it is a legal requirement to fish tungsten barbell eyes with Super glued pupils in Oregon. If you live in California and fish there you are OK, but if you cross the border into Oregon country to fish for king salmon in the last half of October, you had better have your Hareline flat-end tungsten hour glass barbell fly tying eyes on your Comets and Clousers and you had better have little cute pupils on these flies or you will be locked up in Gold Beach for sure.
