One of the most common questions we are asked artisans relates to the unique color phases and textures of feathers. If one purchases an artificial product, say, Craft Fur for example, each and every piece of the material will be exactly alike. Feathers are quite different. Think about human hair. Each person's hair color, texture, and such characteristics is a little or a lot different. Rooster feathers, all bird feathers for that matter, are unique. The feathers from domestic birds used by fly tyers and craft persons have been selected for consistency and quality, either through selective breeding or by hand sorting prior to packaging.

A second question is simply: what are Grizzly feathers? Grizzly is a term describing the pattern of feathers that display dark gray or black stripes across each feather. The base color phase of a grizzly hackle feather ranges from white to grey and the dark bars may be wide and distinct or narrow and faint. All natural grizzly feathers are this white with black bars color combination. Artificially dyed grizzly saddle and neck feathers absorb each dye a little differently and exhibit variously distinct shades.

Our Whiting Farms and Hareline Eurohackle saddles, both natural and dyed, are all (and we do mean all) long, narrow feathers of the highest quality. Virtually every feather on a saddle patch is useful for fly tying or craft use. That said, it is normal to find subtle differences in the length of feathers (some patches are in the 10-12" range while some may be 12-14"), the amount of web at the center stem of the feather, the width of the feathers (all are "narrow"), or the subtleties of the natural and dyed colors. We do our best to hand pick a saddle with characteristics you specify, knowing that each saddle patch will be a little different, thanks to nature.
