Reviews and EVERYTHING you need to know about the Echo Switch Rod

Review of Echo Switch fly rods. Echo Switch rods are offered in 4 wt. to 8 wt. models. These Switch rods cover the range of applications where one might like to alternate between single and two hand casting, or where brush or back-cast obstacles make a shorter Spey rod the ideal fly fishing rod. These are not Echo Dec Hogan Spey rods, and that is the whole point; Switch rods offer advantages in situations where a full-on Spey rod would not be the best choice.

Can I alternate between swinging and indicator fishing with an Echo Switch rod? Absolutely yes. We fish RIO MOW Tips and swing large flies, fish Scandi type heads and integrated shooting head lines with dry and damp flies, and we sure-as-heck fish down-and-dirty with indicators at the end of our lines. These are very versatile Switch rods of what we would call moderately fast action. The rods allow us to feel the line load the rod and this helps our casting performance at all ranges.

Examples of 4, 5, & 6 wt. Switch rod application. Our Caddis Fly pro staffers fish the 4 and 5 wt Echo SRs while wade and boat fishing with indicators - typically fishing for modest and large trout. We fish these light switch rods swinging Buggers, Sculpins, and streamers in rivers and lakes too. The length of these rods allows us to fish from beaches with little clousers and streamers with slow sinking and intermediate sink fly lines. The 6 wt Switch rod is the heart of our summer steelhead arsenal, and we think sea trout and smaller Atlantic salmon should be a great niche for this rod, as well as large trout in the Great Lakes and South America and Europe.

Examples of 7 & 8 wt Switch rod application. These two Echo Switch rods are the ones we reach for when winter steelheading, fishing for silver salmon or fishing modest sized Chinook in rivers and estuaries. Any similar size fish and conditions would be perfect for these Echo Switch rods.

Are the components of the Ion sufficient to withstand saltwater use? Yes. Like Ion fly rods, The Echo Switch rods are sturdy and dependable: these are fly rods that will withstand the normal insults of banging against tree limbs, dropped on gravel bars, and pushed into nasty shapes in boats and trucks. Just try to avoid stepping on the with your cleats, please.

Will the Echo Switch rod accept Spey reel seats?Yes. We fish Echo Switch rods with big fly reels all the time.

What lines and line weights will Echo Switch rods handle? Echo Switch rods, like all modern rods engineered by Echo and other fly rod manufacturers, perform amazingly well with a huge range of fly lines. We fish traditional line tapers and Switch lines on these rods, and they all get the job done. Our favorite line for fishing sink tips is the Airflo Skagit Switch line. Here are some examples, and we can help advise you on lines for any of these rods. Airflo Skagit Switch Line 5 wt. -- 330 gr. 6 wt. -- 360 gr. 7 wt. -- 420 gr. 8 wt. -- 480 gr.
