Echo Shadow Fly Fishing Rods- FREE Shipping, No Sales Tax

Review of Echo Shadow fly rods. This is probably the most specialized fly rod series offered by Echo . Pete Erickson is an award winning fly fisher who specializes in Polish/Czech short line nymphing. We call it “high stick” nymphing around these parts, and it is indeed a very specialized form of fly fishing. The three rods offered in this series are long (10’ to 11’) and are very light and powerful at the same time (3- and 4-weight rods).

Is a 3 wt. Shadow fly rod comparable to a traditional 3 wt fly rod? No, they are not even close. The Shadow is not only long, it is far heavier in the mid and butt section, making it better suited to fishing Czech style with heavily weighted nymphs on a short tether. Don't let the words "far heavier" put you off, however, because these rods must be held on stream, and fished to really appreciate how effective a fly fishing tool they are.

Echo Shadow Review: A Czech Nympher's Best Friend

What is specialized about an Echo Shadow? These fly rods are long, and made so in order to manage the presentation of a nymph in swift water without benefit of a strike indicator. The Shadow has a light tip with smooth action that will allow use of fine tippets. The rod is balanced to allow one to fish High-stick nymph or pure Czech style all day long, in spite of the long rod length. These rods are also finished beautifully, and the cosmetic aspects and fittings of the Shadow are quite pleasing.

Is the Echo Shadow strictly useful for Czech nymphing? No - and sort-of. We fish Echo Shadow rods for many general applications in streams and lakes, fishing from gravel bars, wade fishing, casting to under-cut banks from drift boats, and float tubing in lakes. That said, the Shadow is best suited to high stick nymphing in the true Czech style, with heavy weighted nymphs. If you are seeking a general purpose fly rod, we suggest you consider the Echo Edge Freshwater Fly Rod.

Shadow fly rods protect fine tippets. The fine, flexible tip of the Shadow will cushion and therefore protect fine tippets from the runs and rushes of big trout. At the same time, the rod is not a noodle, and it has a firm lower section capable of managing casts, fly presentation, and fish fighting.

What lines and line weights will Echo Shadow rods handle? Although the Echo Shadow is engineered specifically for High-Stick nymphing, with only a few feet of fly line out of the guides, the Shadow casts standard weight forward or DT taper fly lines very nicely. No kidding. For these applications, one may use a fly line rated to match the rod (3 or 4 wt.) or even upgrade the line weight and achieve very fine casting with dry flies, soft hackles, buggers, and indicators.
