Echo Shadow PE. Complete fly fishing outfit for high stick nymphing, or as some refer to it – as Polish/Czech nymph fishing with short lines. No, the lines are not really short, one just doesn’t normally unleash much line beyond the rod tip. Oh by the way, did we mention that this is a complete fly fishing outfit? Well, this is indeed a complete fly fishing combo for High Stick nymphing. A hot deal. Excuse us, but this style of nymphing was around before the advent of decent strike indicators. Oh well, it is fun to rediscover the wheel, yes?

Nymphing rocks. McKenzie. Metolius. Deschutes, oh yeah baby, the Deschutes is nymph-o-rama, all year long. And the upper Rogue too. Ask Rick Hafele. Ask Dave Hughes. Ask us. Trout eat nymphs. And steelhead? Oh yeah. Steelhead eat nymphs too.

The Echo Shadow fly rod was influenced by cool dude and world famous fly fisher Pete Erickson. He advised Tim Rajeff on the design of the Echo Shadow, a long specialized nymphing fly rod that the Caddis fly is honored to offer as a complete fly fishing outfit to get you absolutely into the crosshairs, in a good way, to give this challenging and intriguing method of fishing nymphs a go now, right now, instead of fretting over choosing the right combo of rod, reel, line, leader and so on.

Here is the deal on the Echo Shadow fly rods offered as the rock-solid core of these complete fly fishing outfits. These rods a re long, the 3 wt is 10" or 10’ 6” and the 4 wt. is 11’ long. These rods have a fast action, so to speak, but they have very light tips to buffer the stress on a gossamer tippet when a gigantamundo trout or heaven forbid – a steelhead, eats one of the several nymphs you might be fishing on this fine fly rod.

Czech nymphing or high stick nymphing seems like a crazy lookin’ method if you are watching someone else fishing and don’t know what this style represents – you would be thinking 1) the poor soul can’t even cast; 2) they forgot the strike indicator; 3) man is that a long leader; and 4) oh boy I wish I had a triple venti, two extra shots, three pump, white chocolate mocha right now.

This complete Czech nymphing fly fishing outfit delivers an Echo Shadow fly rod, Ross CLA 3 fly reel, and a Rio Indicator Taper fly line; we know they are dialed-in and offer serious savings when purchased as a complete fly fishing outfit.

Note 1 – we recommend lining each of these rods with a line one-size heavier than the rod designation. The traditional method of fishing these fly rods is to only have a few feet of fly sine out of the rod tip, maybe up to 6-8 feet of line (or even just a couple of feet), but the line usually is not on the water. The fly angler follows the drifting leader, tipped with two or three flies, and watches for a little tiny mouse-like twitch of the leader that indicates a fish has consumed one of said nymphs. However, we do recognize that some anglers will want to reach out a little further and cast these like normal fly rods so in this case a little heftier line will load the rod for even short casts.

Note 2. This is a great fly rod that is far more versatile than the very specialized tactics is spotlighted for. Fish this with strike indicators. Swing soft hackles as the bugs emerge. Troll buggers behind your float tube in high lakes. Light tips, light leaders, heavy fun.
