Sea-run cutthroat. Harvest trout. Bluebacks. This elusive and mystical coastal cutthroat is an anadromous life form of a trout distributed from Northern California to Prince William Sound in Alaska. These fish are present in brackish and tidal influenced waters for extended periods, and in Oregon, run into coastal rivers during the summer and fall. These fish are spectacular on the fly, known especially for the savageness of their approach to a streamer-type fly. These fish typically range from about 12” to over 20”, with most in the 13” to 15” range. Flies are commonly taken within inches or the top two feet of the water column so we like to fish floating fly lines with short (5’) clear intermediate tips.
