We have fished and abused Bauer Fly Reels for over 15 years now. We know John and Barbara Bauer very well and understand his commitment to producing a top flight product.

The CFX Fly Reel from Bauer Fly Reels is the latest fly reel in a string of products designed by John Bauer to have unique functioning features while still using the most generally accepted materials on the market today. What do we mean by this?

Well the CFX is made from high quality BAR STOCK aircraft aluminum. It has been anodized for saltwater and years of abuse. John Bauer is such a stickler for machining and anodizing that we have never see one of his reels come back to us regarding a finish issue or a bent spool issue. Which brings me to another great quality of Bauer Fly reels including the CFX. While these reels are light and do have great looks they also maintain a really solid feel. A built to last strength that is John Bauer's standard, these are tough reels.

The CFX reels also use a carbon fiber drag mechanism. You will find most reel companies using a similar system, Nautilus, Ross, Sage to name a few. The CFX uses this "sealed" carbon fiber drag. The drag is smooth and maintenance free.

No the truly unique features to the CFX that make it a John Bauer creation. The most obvious is that the drag knob is on the same side as the handle. For drag adjustment made easy. Now the Bauer Mackenzie series and MXP series reels also had this feature and some folks loved it and some hated it. The complaints were that the drag adjustment knob which is also the spool release, could part with the spool, meaning it could be dropped over-board. Now we never saw this but we do understand. The new CFX Bauer reel has a drag adjustment and spool release mechanism that does not part from the spool. When you need to remove the spool you simply loosen the drag until the star knob is free spinning and the spool and knob attached come off together, knob attached to spool. The other key feature about the CFX drag knob on the same side as the handle is that it has been set down in the spool just slightly more than previous Bauer fly reel models. While you are cranking in a fish or line the chance of touching and moving the drag adjustment have been minimized greatly. We see the drag knob on the same side as the handle as a great advantage and a unique feature that sets Bauer fly reels apart.

The CFX series has a great overall look. With the back of the reel free from any knobs or screws it has a clean ported appearance.

Whether you are looking for a lightweight new reel for your three weight (CFX1) or considering a new Bonefish Reel CFX5) Bauer has you covered with the newest in a line of quality fly reels.
